water - 6-8 cups

tomatoes - 2

red chili powder - 1 teaspoon

cumin seeds or jeera - 1 heap teaspoon

black peppercorns - 1/2 teaspoon

asafetida - 1 pinch

salt to taste

ghee (clarified butter) - 1 tablespoon

mustard seeds or rai - 1/2 teaspoon

toor dal (yellow pigeon peas) - 1/2 teaspoon (optional)

curry leaves - 6-8

fresh coriander leaves - from 2-3 sprigs
