6 anchovies

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 cup drained capers

1 lb fusilli or penne or linguine

1 tablespoon fresh thyme , chopped or 1 teaspoon dried thyme

1 bay leaf

1 (28 ounce) can whole tomatoes

1 cup chopped pitted black olives

3 garlic cloves , finely chopped

1 cup finely chopped onion

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

1 tablespoon anchovy oil (from the anchovy tin)

1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 tablespoon fresh oregano , chopped or 1 teaspoon dried oregano

2 tablespoons fresh basil , coarsely chopped or 1 teaspoon dried basil
