4 smallish boned duck breasts, each about 4 ounces; or 2 large ones, each about 8 ounces

1/2 teaspoon five-spice powder

1 teaspoon cumin

Large pinch of allspice

1/4 teaspoon dried thyme leaves

1/2 teaspoon paprika

1/8 teaspoon cinnamon

1 teaspoon sugar

3 garlic cloves, chopped

Salt to taste

Several shakes chipotle hot sauce (such as Bufalo)

1 cup dry white wine

2 cups chicken broth

Juice of 1/2 orange

1 to 1 1/2 cups ripe blackberries

2 tablespoons chopped cilantro or fresh basil
