1 teaspoon sugar (to taste)

2 tablespoons olive oil

2 cups tomato sauce , mediterranean (purchased or homemade)

1 small onion , peeled but left whole

2 sprigs fresh parsley

1 cup cubed carrot

1 tablespoon finely minced garlic (or to taste)

1 tablespoon lemon juice

4 whole cloves

1 teaspoon dried basil

2 garlic cloves , minced

Topping

Beans

2 (15 ounce) cans chickpeas , drained, liquid reserved, and rinsed

1 teaspoon dried thyme

1/2 cup fresh parsley , chopped

2 cups dry breadcrumbs

Sauce

6 plum tomatoes , chopped or 3 medium tomatoes , chopped

1 cup chopped onion

salt & freshly ground black pepper, to taste
