water - 1 1/2 cups, that the beans were cooked in, or water / vegetable broth

oil - 1 tbsp

onion - 1, finely chopped

garlic - 5 cloves, crushed

jalapeno - 1, finely chopped

bay leaf - 1

ginger - 1/2" piece, crushed

cumin powder - 3/4 tsp

parsley - 4 sprigs, chopped, or 1/2 tsp dried

cilantro - 5 stalks, chopped

red pepper flakes - 1/2 tsp, optional

lime juice - 2 tsp

salt - to taste
