1 pound fresh mussels, washed and debearded

1 cup fish, vegetable, or chicken broth

1 cup bottled clam juice

1 bay leaf

6 sprigs thyme

3 cloves garlic, minced

2 tablespoons butter

1/4 cup unbleached all purpose flour

2 cups milk

1 red potato, cubed

1 rib celery, chopped

1 small green bell pepper, chopped

1 small red bell pepper, chopped

1 cup frozen corn, thawed

1 carrot, chopped

1/4 pound medium shrimp, peeled and deveined

1/4 pound cod, cut into 1" cubes

hot-pepper sauce

1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh parsley
