1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper, divided

1 1/2 cups no-beef or mushroom broth, divided

3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

8 ounces white mushrooms, coarsely chopped

1/4 cup finely chopped onion

2 tablespoons finely chopped chives

1/2 cup shredded extra-sharp cheddar cheese

4 strips of vegetarian bacon (I prefer the tempeh kind), cooked according to package and crumbled
