1/4 cup packed light brown sugar

1/3 cup walnuts, toasted and finely choppedĀ 

1/4 tsp. pure vanilla extract

1-3/4 oz. (1/3 cup plus 1 Tbs.) unbleachedall-purpose flour

1 Tbs. brandy

1/2 tsp. table salt

3 large ripe pears, such as Anjou or Bartlett

1 Tbs. half-and-half

2 cups fresh cranberries, picked through and rinsed

1/8 tsp. table salt

2 tsp. unbleached all-purpose flour

2/3 cup granulated sugar

1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon
