  • 1 tsp Chinese five spice powder
  • 1 (2 1/2 lb) whole chickens , preferably free range, rinsed
  • 2 tsps ground turmeric
  • 3 Tbsps minced ginger
  • 1/2 Tbsp sea salt
  • 2 Tbsps sugar
  • 4 star anise pods
  • 2 Tbsps soy sauce
  • 2 Tbsps minced garlic cloves
