Caramel Topping

1/4 cup ( 1/2 stick) butter, cut into four pieces

3/4 cup light brown sugar

1/4 cup heavy cream

4 or 5 ripe peaches, peeled, halved and pitted (enough peach halves to cover the bottom of a 10-inch skillet)

Cake Batter

1/3 cup vegetable shortening

2/3 cup sugar

2 teaspoons vanilla

2 eggs

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

2 1/4 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup milk
