8 ounces ditalini or tubetti or spaghetti , broken into bite sized pieces

freshly grated parmigiano-reggiano cheese

Foe the end of cooking and serving

1 cup freshly grated parmigiano-reggiano cheese

1/2 cup onion , finely minced

For the Meatballs

pepper , freshly ground (to taste)

1 large egg , mixed

1 teaspoon salt
