The pistou:

3 or 4 cloves garlic, peeled and coarsely chopped

1/4 teaspoon coarse sea salt

1 packed cup fresh basil leaves

1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil

The soup:

1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil

1 small onion, diced

1 carrot, peeled and diced

3 small potatoes, peeled and diced

1 large zucchini, diced

2 cups vegetable or chicken broth

1 teaspoon sea salt or kosher salt + more to taste

4 sprigs fresh thyme

4 sprigs fresh parsley

1/2 pound haricots verts, cut into 1-inch long pieces

1/2 cup broken spaghetti pieces

1 pound cranberry beans, shelled and cooked

1 pound butter beans or fresh garbanzo beans, shelled and cooked
