1 quart buttermilk

4 cups flour

1 teaspoon sea salt

1 teaspoon pepper

1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)

1/4 teaspoon sugar (optional)

1/4 cup finely chopped yellow onion (optional)

2 tablespoons olive oil

2 quarts safflower or canola oil
