6 fresh garlic cloves

1 teaspoon star ground aniseed

250 g white pearl onions

2 teaspoons fresh ginger , grated

2 teaspoons kashmiri chili powder

1 1/2 teaspoons coriander seeds

1 teaspoon nigella seeds

1 tablespoon mustard oil or canola oil

1/2 cup Urad Dal (white lentils) or red lentil

1 kg lamb or goat meat, cubed

6 green cardamom seeds

1 teaspoon turmeric powder

1 1/2 cups water

2 teaspoons salt

1 small fresh fennel bulb

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1 teaspoon yellow mustard seeds , for masala

250 g sweet potatoes
