2 medium shallots or 1 small yellow onion, chopped very fine

1 cup pearl barley

1 teaspoon hot chili flakes

1 bunch of asparagus, trimmed and cut into 1"-pieces

2 cups fresh spinach

1/4 cup freshly grated parmesan cheese

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1/4 cup fresh basil leaves, chopped
