16 Ingredients

  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour, plus extra for rolling
  • 2 1/2 tsps baking powder
  • 1 Tbsp ground ginger
  • 1 1/2 tsps ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 8 Tbsps (1 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 2/3 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup dark molasses
  • 2 cups confectioners' sugar
  • 2 Tbsps plus 2 tsps warm water
  • 1 Tbsp light corn syrup
  • 2 or 3 drops food coloring (optional)
  • Candies, raisins and/or miniature semisweet chocolate chips for decorating
