2 pounds portabello mushrooms, sliced into ¼ inch slices

½ carrot, finely chopped

1 small yellow onion, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 cup full-bodied red wine

2 cups vegetable broth

2 tablespoons tomato paste

3-4 sprigs fresh thyme (or ½ teaspoon dried)

1 tablespoon butter

1 ½ tablespoons all purpose flour

1 cup pearl onions, peeled and thawed if frozen (optional)

egg noodles, cooked
