1 1/2 cups French green lentils

8 whole cloves

1 small yellow onion

2 bay leaves

2 Tbs. extra-virgin olive oil

1 small red onion, minced

4 garlic cloves, minced

3 tomatoes, peeled, seeded and chopped (fresh or canned)

1 1/2 cups bottled clam juice

1 1/2 tsp. ground cumin

1 1/2 tsp. ground ginger

3/4 tsp. ground turmeric

3/4 tsp. sweet paprika

1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper

1/3 cup chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley

1/3 cup chopped fresh cilantro

3 Tbs. fresh lemon juice

Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste

6 skinless salmon fillets, each 5 to 6 oz. and

3/4 to 1 inch thick
