1 prepared (10-inch) sweet pie crust, recipe follows

2 tablespoons solid vegetable shortening

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

3 tablespoons ice water

4 ounces (1 stick) cold butter, cut into 1/2-inch pieces

1 teaspoon baking soda

Pinch salt

1/2 teaspoon salt

3/4 cup hot water

1 large egg

1 cup bleached all-purpose flour

3/4 cup light brown sugar
