2 teaspoons canola oil

1 small yellow onion, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, finely chopped

1″ piece fresh ginger root, peeled and finely chopped or grated

1 tablespoon curry powder

1/2 teaspoon ground cumin

1/2 teaspoon garam masala

1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)

1 teaspoon kosher salt (divided into 1/2 tsp and 1/2 tsp)

1 pound chicken breast, boneless and skinless, cut into bite sized pieces

8 ounce can tomato sauce

1 15-ounce can chickpeas, drained and rinsed

1/3 cup frozen peas
