1/2 cup dry sherry

16 ounces pumpkin puree (abouit 1 1/2 cups)

1/4 cup unsalted butter (1/4 cup)

1/2 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper

1 cup drained canned tomato , chopped

4 cups beef broth

4 garlic cloves , minced

1/2 cup minced shallot

1/2 lb cooked ham , cut into 1/8-inch dice

1 1/4 cups chopped onions
