Ingredients for 9 servings

1 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch

3/4 cup all-purpose flour

3 small apples , cored, unpeeled and thinly sliced

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 cup sugar

3/4 cup rolled oat

1/2 cup chopped pecans (optional) or walnuts (optional)

3/4 cup brown sugar , packed

1/2 cup hot water

2 teaspoons lemon juice , divided

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

3/4 cup whole wheat flour (you can use all white flour if that's all you have around, but wheat flour will add more good-for-yo)

10 tablespoons cold butter , divided

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

3/8 teaspoon salt (just dip the 1/4 tsp measuring spoon in halfway for that 1/8)
