Kick-Ass Spicy Turkey Chili

This chili was created on a whim and under the influence of an empty stomach. While making it, I added everything to-taste, so I recommend doing that as well. Make it your own and add more or less of certain ingredients that appeal to you. This recipe is a good guideline on how to make a hearty (yet healthy), spicy, chili that can be modified to satisfy all palates.

For real... kind of. That was an estimate. I didn't buy "chili beans" that have that chili flavor with it. In order to get that hearty, chili taste, you need a lot of chili powder and cumin. (more so chili powder)

Ingredients for 6 servings

1 lb ground turkey (can use beef if preferred)

2 cans dark red kidney beans, drained

1 can black beans, drained

1 can butter beans (or any other white bean), drained

4 chipotles (diced) and 2 Tbsps of the adobo sauce

2 10oz cans of diced tomatoes with green chilis

1 6oz can tomato paste + 1 can full of water

1-2 tbsp of a red hot sauce (I used Burmans)

1 tbsp of green hot sauce (I used El Yucateco Chile Habanero)

2 tbsp Worcestershire

2 jalapenos, diced

1 green pepper, diced

1 large sweet or yellow onion, diced

1 tbsp garlic powder

1 tbsp onion powder

1/3 cup chili powder

1/4 cup cumin

1 tbsp cayenne pepper

1 tbsp oregano

1 1/2 tbsp paprika

salt and pepper

*optional: add some beer (or more water) if you like soupier chili

Begin by heating up a large pot with evoo. Set the burner to medium heat and saute the diced onions and diced green pepper. After a couple minutes, add the ground turkey. While sauteing over medium heat, add the spices and the green and red hot sauces.

Once the ground turkey is cooked thoroughly, start adding the remaining ingredients, including the beans, chilis in adobo, diced tomatoes with chilis, tomato paste, Worcestershire, and jalapenos. At this time you can make the decision of how soupy you want your chili to be. Adding 6 oz of water (from the tomato paste can) will make the chili's consistency to the one as shown in the picture. However, some like their chili with a little more liquid, so of course more can be added (beer can be used instead of water.. good addition).

After all the ingredients are added, taste the chili and add more spices if needed. To give it that delicious chili flavor, add more chili powder if you think it needs it. Cook until all the peppers are are tender and the flavors are developed (30-45 minutes total). The longer it cooks, the better. Serve with a dollop of sour cream and shredded cheddar cheese. Enjoy!
