Ingredients

1 tablespoon Chinese black beans, rinsed and coarsely chopped

1 tablespoon soy sauce

1 teaspoon unseasoned rice vinegar

1 teaspoon Chinese rice wine or dry sherry

1 small garlic clove, minced

1 teaspoon minced fresh ginger

1 teaspoon vegetable oil

1 (10- to 14-ounce) fillet of skinless Pacific sea bass, striped bass or halibut, about 1 inch thick (see Note)

Salt to taste

1/2 bunch medium-thick asparagus, trimmed and cut into 2-inch lengths
