1/4 cup flour

1 cup red wine (or beef or vegetable broth + 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar)

3 cups beef broth (or vegetable broth)

2 cloves garlic (chopped)

1 teaspoon thyme (chopped)

2 bay leaves

salt & pepper to taste
