1 teaspoon lavender (flowers only), plus extra for garnish

1 cup plus 1 tablespoon sugar

1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature

4 teaspoons grated lemon zest

2 eggs, at room temperature

1 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1/4 teaspoon coarse sea salt, preferably gray salt

1/4 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 cup buttermilk

olive oil for brushing

1 pint blackberries or 1 pint of any sweet summer berry
