Still trying to figure out how to make this have the flaky texture of bread. Mine always turns out chewy and very thick. Any suggestions are welcomed!!

Ingredients for 12 servings

1 tsp salt

1 tsp baking soda

4 cups flour

4 tsps brown sugar

2 cups buttermilk

1 cup raisins

Preparation

1.

Preheat oven to 425F.

Sift flour, salt, baking soda, sugar, and raisins into a bowl. Make a well in middle of mixture.

3.

Pour buttermilk into well and mix with your hands. Dough should be soft but not wet.

4.

Turn out dough on slightly floured counter and knead. Shape into a round and cut a cross into the top of the dough.

5.

Bake in oven for 35-45 minutes, until golden brown and loaf sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

6.

Let cool on wire rack. Sprinkle a dash of flour over the top.

7.

Serve warm.
