4 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast (2 packages)

1/2 cup warm water, 105 to 115 degrees

1/2 cup sugar (you may add up to 1 1/2 cups for a sweeter bread), plus one teaspoon for activating the yeast

1 12 ounce can evaporated milk warmed, 105 to 115 degrees

2 teaspoons salt

2 teaspoons ground cardamom

4 eggs, room temperature

7-8 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 cup melted butter

1 slightly beaten egg

2 tablespoons milk
