4 slices bacon (or 1/3 pound pancetta), roughly chopped

3 medium yellow onions, diced

3 carrots, chopped ½ inch pieces

3 garlic cloves, minced

2 sprigs fresh rosemary

1 bottle red wine (I used a spicy, full-bodied Malbec-Cabernet blend from Chile)

2 -3 cups beef broth
