2 tablespoons soy sauce or fish sauce (nuoc mam or nam pla, available at Asian markets)

1 teaspoon minced garlic

1 teaspoon peeled and minced or grated fresh ginger or 1 teaspoon ground ginger

1 teaspoon sugar

Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
